Waterloo is a manufacturing town with a university next door, which means the fire protection work here runs from plant floors and paint booths to dorm kitchens and downtown restaurants. We have covered all of it since 1975.
Fire & Safety Equipment III LLC services the Cedar Valley — extinguisher inspection, service and recharge, kitchen suppression, hood cleaning, paint booth systems, CO₂ refills, and hands-on training. We cover Waterloo and Cedar Falls along with Evansdale, Hudson, Waverly, Jesup, La Porte City, and Denver.
A Manufacturing City on the Cedar River
Waterloo has been a heavy manufacturing town for well over a century, and that shapes the work. The John Deere operations, the meatpacking and food processing plants, the foundries, the fabricators, the machine shops that supply all of it — these are buildings with hot work, flammable liquids, dust, large open spans, and long travel distances.
Downtown along the river has been rebuilding for years now. The RiverLoop Amphitheatre and Expo Plaza, the Waterloo Center for the Arts, the Grout Museum District, restaurants and taprooms in buildings that were warehouses a generation ago. Every one of those conversions creates a kitchen or a bar that needs equipment somebody has to keep current.
We have been running this route since 1975 — through plant expansions, downtown rebuilds, and a lot of ownership changes. When a Cedar Valley business calls us, there is a good chance we already have the building on file.
The Cedar Valley, Town by Town
Cedar Falls sits directly upriver and functions as a full partner city rather than a suburb. The University of Northern Iowa is there — dormitories, dining halls, labs, the UNI-Dome — along with Main Street’s restaurants and shops and a substantial industrial park. It is a large share of our Black Hawk County work.
Evansdale sits east of Waterloo along the river with its own commercial buildings, school, and industrial base. Hudson, south on Highway 63, has a school district and a downtown. La Porte City, further southeast, is a working small town with its own main street and grain operations.
North on Highway 218 is Waverly, home to Wartburg College — another campus, another set of dining halls, dormitories, and labs, plus a real downtown along the Cedar River. Denver and Jesup round out the route: smaller communities with schools, churches, restaurants, and shops that need the same annual inspections as anyone else.
None of these is a special trip. They are all on the same run.

Plant Floors, Hot Work, and Special Hazards
Manufacturing is where a generic extinguisher program falls down fastest. A row of identical 10-pound ABC units hung at convenient intervals is not a fire protection plan — it is decoration.
We walk the plant and match equipment to the actual hazard. Class D for combustible metals in machining and foundry work. CO₂ near energized equipment and control rooms where dry chemical residue would do real damage. Larger wheeled units where the hazard justifies them. Correct travel distances under NFPA 10, measured the way a person actually walks around equipment rather than through it.
Hot work areas, flammable liquid storage, and battery charging each get their own treatment. We put all of it in the written report rather than quietly re-tagging what somebody hung fifteen years ago. See inspection and service.
Paint Booths and Finishing Operations
Between the equipment shops, the collision repair trade, and the manufacturers who finish in-house, the Cedar Valley has a lot of spray booths. Every one falls under NFPA 33 and needs semiannual service.
That means agent tank weight and hydrostatic date, cartridge, fusible links in the airstream, nozzle caps, cable and pull station function, and the interlocks that shut down spray equipment, paint pumps, and the exhaust and makeup air fans on actuation. A booth system that fires while the fan keeps running is pushing agent out the stack instead of onto the fire, so we function-test the interlocks every visit.
Overspray loading in the plenum, duct, and fan is the other half of the problem, and we will tell you honestly during inspection whether your filter change interval is keeping up. See paint booth fire suppression.
Kitchens, Campuses, and Downtown
Between the residence dining halls at UNI in Cedar Falls and Wartburg in Waverly, the hospital and care facility kitchens, the school districts in Hudson, Jesup, Denver, and La Porte City, and the restaurants downtown and in Evansdale, this route has a lot of hoods.
All of them are on a six-month suppression cycle under NFPA 17A. We replace and test fusible links, verify the manual pull station is reachable from the egress path, confirm the gas valve or electric shunt drops on actuation, check cylinder weight and hydro date, and clear and re-cap the nozzles. Tag, written report, done. See kitchen fire suppression.
Hood cleaning is the other half. Grease travels the full run and burns all at once. We clean to bare metal, photograph before and after, and leave a certificate and a dated sticker. See commercial hood cleaning.
CO₂ Extinguishers for Plants and Control Rooms
The Cedar Valley’s plant floors are full of control panels, motor control centers and electrical rooms where dry chemical residue would cost more than the fire, and the campus in Cedar Falls adds labs and server rooms to the list. We fill CO₂ fire extinguishers by weight in our Platteville shop, track the five-year hydrostatic date, and swap a tested unit onto your wall so the room is never uncovered.
Beverage and industrial cylinders are a different animal, and we are not set up to fill them in Waterloo yet — that service is currently limited to the Dubuque–Platteville area while we bring more equipment online. If you have them, call and ask rather than assuming either way. Details on CO₂ refill.
Training for Plant and Campus Staff
Most people have never discharged an extinguisher. We fix that on site with a propane fire prop and our own dry chemical extinguishers, and every participant puts out a live fire with an extinguisher in their own hands.
Cedar Valley manufacturers use this heavily, along with the campuses, care facilities, and school districts. We schedule around shifts, including early mornings and evenings, so second shift is not asked to come in on their own time. See fire extinguisher training.
Fire Codes and Inspections in Waterloo
Commercial buildings in Waterloo answer to three layers of rules, and knowing them takes the mystery out of an inspection. Iowa’s fire code rules, Iowa Admin. Code 481—Chapter 280, Fire Control Administration, adopt the 2024 edition of the International Fire Code with Iowa amendments. The IFC requires portable extinguishers to be selected, installed and maintained under NFPA 10, requires commercial kitchen hoods to be inspected and cleaned at the intervals in NFPA 96 with records kept on the premises, requires a UL 300-listed suppression system over grease-producing cooking equipment serviced at the NFPA 17A interval, and requires spray booths to be protected under NFPA 33. The Iowa State Fire Marshal Division enforces the state code, and local fire departments enforce it building by building. For any employer, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 applies on top — monthly extinguisher checks, annual maintenance, and annual extinguisher education for staff — and Iowa’s own OSHA program adopts those federal standards for public and private workplaces alike.
Waterloo Fire Rescue is the local authority in the city, with Cedar Falls running its own department next door. Between the plants, the university and the food processors, Black Hawk County inspectors see the full range of what the fire code covers. What the inspector looks for is consistent: a current tag on every extinguisher, a semiannual tag on the kitchen suppression system, a cleaning label on the hood and the cleaning records that go with it, a current tag on the booth system in a body shop, extinguishers of the right class within travel distance, and records they can put their hands on. Those are exactly the things our technicians leave behind, which is why customers in Waterloo tend to call us before the inspection rather than after.
If an inspection has already produced a correction notice, send it to us. Most extinguisher, hood and suppression items on an Iowa fire inspection report can be corrected on a single visit, and we document the correction so you can close it out without a second trip from the department.

Questions We Get From Waterloo Businesses
Do you service Cedar Falls as well as Waterloo?
Yes, along with Evansdale, Hudson, Waverly, Jesup, La Porte City, and Denver. Same route, no separate trip charge for the surrounding communities.
Our plant has machining and foundry work. Do you handle Class D?
Yes. Combustible metal fires need the right agent for the specific metal, not a generic ABC unit. We walk the floor with your safety lead and put together a plan that matches the actual hazard.
How often does a paint booth need service?
Semiannually under NFPA 33 and NFPA 17, with fusible links typically replaced annually because overspray coats them and changes how they respond. In heavy production shops we sometimes recommend a shorter interval on the nozzle and link checks.
We are shut down because our booth discharged. How fast can you come?
Call the same day. Recharging a booth system is a priority job for us because you are not spraying until it is back in service. We stock agent, cartridges, links, and nozzle caps.
Can you handle a whole campus at once?
Yes. Dormitories, dining halls, labs, and athletic facilities get grouped onto a scheduled block with one consolidated report and invoice. We do this for campuses on this route already.
What happens if an extinguisher fails inspection?
Depends on the failure. Low gauge or broken seal means a recharge. Caked powder means internal maintenance. A corroded shell, missing nameplate, or pre-1984 unit means replacement. We tell you the category and the cost before doing anything.
Do you fill beverage CO₂ in Waterloo?
Not yet. Beverage-cylinder fills are currently a Dubuque–Platteville area service while we bring more equipment online. We do fill and service CO₂ fire extinguishers here; if you have beverage or industrial cylinders, call and ask rather than assuming either way.
We have several buildings around the Cedar Valley. One visit?
Yes, and we prefer it. Multi-building accounts get grouped onto one visit or day with a single consolidated report and invoice.
