Fire Protection in La Crosse, Wisconsin

La Crosse, Wisconsin · Serving the Coulee Region Since 1975

La Crosse sits where three rivers meet, wedged between bluffs, with three colleges, two hospital systems, and a downtown that has been feeding people for a century and a half. Every bit of that runs on equipment somebody has to keep current.

Need service in La Crosse?Inspections, kitchen suppression, hood cleaning, CO₂ and training — one company, one invoice. Discharge calls go to the front of the queue.

Fire & Safety Equipment III LLC has covered the Coulee Region since 1975 — extinguisher inspection, service and recharge, kitchen suppression, hood cleaning, paint booth systems, CO₂ refills, and hands-on training. We work in La Crosse and out through Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem, French Island, Bangor, and Trempealeau.

Three Rivers, Three Colleges, and a Lot of Kitchens

La Crosse is boxed in by geography — Grandad Bluff on one side, the Mississippi, Black, and La Crosse rivers on the other. That means the city built up rather than out, and downtown is dense with old buildings that have been restaurants, taverns, and shops for generations. Third Street alone has one of the highest concentrations of bars per block in the state, and every one of them runs a draft system.

The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Western Technical College put thousands of students downtown and bring dormitories, dining halls, labs, and athletic facilities with them. Gundersen and Mayo Clinic Health System operate large campuses with kitchens, labs, server rooms, and around-the-clock operations.

Add the industrial side — food and beverage production, manufacturing along the river, distribution along I-90 — and you have the full range of fire protection work in a city of this size. We have been running this route since 1975.

The Coulee Region Communities

Onalaska sits just north along Lake Onalaska and functions as the commercial spine of the area — the Highway 16 corridor, restaurants, medical offices, hotels, and retail. It is a large share of our La Crosse County work.

Holmen, further north, has been one of the fastest-growing communities in western Wisconsin, which means new restaurants that need suppression systems installed and commissioned, new schools, and new commercial buildings needing full extinguisher programs from day one.

French Island sits in the Mississippi between La Crosse and the Minnesota line, with the airport, marinas, and a set of businesses that are genuinely on an island — worth planning around when you schedule.

East on Highway 16, West Salem has a real downtown, a school district, and light industrial. Bangor, further east, is a small town with a school, churches, and a main street. North along the river, Trempealeau is a village built around the lock and dam and Perrot State Park, with restaurants and taverns that stay busy through the season.

All of it is on the same route, and none of it carries a separate trip charge.

Downtown Kitchens, Bars, and UL 300

Third Street and the surrounding blocks are where most of our La Crosse kitchen work happens, and those buildings are old. Small kitchens, low ceilings, awkward duct runs, and hoods that were fitted into rooms nobody designed for cooking.

Every hood with a suppression system is on a six-month cycle under NFPA 17A. Each visit: fusible links replaced and tested, manual pull station verified reachable and unblocked, gas valve or electric shunt confirmed to drop on actuation, cylinder weight and hydrostatic date checked, nozzles cleared and re-capped. Tag and written report.

In buildings this old we still find pre-UL 300 dry chemical systems. Those cannot reliably keep modern vegetable oil below its reignition point and will not pass in most jurisdictions. We tell you where you stand and quote the replacement honestly. See kitchen fire suppression.

Hood cleaning is the other half, and a high-volume downtown kitchen loads grease fast. We clean to bare metal, photograph before and after, and leave a certificate and a dated sticker. See commercial hood cleaning.

Campus and Hospital Work

Between UW–La Crosse, Viterbo, Western Technical College, and the two hospital systems, this city has an unusual amount of institutional square footage.

Those buildings need more than a row of identical ABC units. Labs may need Class D for combustible metals and CO₂ near sensitive instruments. Server rooms and electrical closets are better served by CO₂ than dry chemical, because monoammonium phosphate residue is mildly corrosive and gets everywhere. Patient care areas need units placed for staff whose first job is moving people.

We work through it on the walk-through with your safety officer or facilities lead, and we schedule multi-building campuses as a block with one consolidated report. See inspection and service.

Shops, Booths, and Riverfront Industry

Collision shops, equipment refinishers, cabinet and millwork operations, and manufacturers who finish in-house all run spray booths under NFPA 33 — in La Crosse, in Onalaska, and out toward West Salem.

Semiannual service means agent tank weight and hydrostatic date, cartridge, fusible links in the airstream, nozzle caps, cable and pull station function, and the interlocks that shut down spray equipment, paint pumps, and the exhaust and makeup air fans. We function-test the interlocks rather than assuming them. See paint booth fire suppression.

The food and beverage production along the river brings its own profile: wash-down areas that corrode extinguisher shells fast, ammonia refrigeration spaces, and packaging lines. Corroded and pitted shells are not repairable, and we flag them in writing rather than re-tagging.

CO₂ Extinguishers for Campus, Clinics, and Industry

Three colleges, two hospital systems, and the manufacturing along the river add up to a lot of labs, server rooms, imaging suites and electrical rooms — places where dry chemical residue would cost more than the fire. We fill CO₂ fire extinguishers by weight in our Platteville shop, track the five-year hydrostatic date, and swap a tested unit onto your wall so the room is never uncovered.

Beverage and industrial cylinders are a different animal, and we are not set up to fill them in La Crosse yet — that service is currently limited to the Dubuque–Platteville area while we bring more equipment online. If you have them, call and ask rather than assuming either way. Details on CO₂ refill.

Training for Staff Who Turn Over

Restaurant and campus staff turn over constantly, which means the person nearest the extinguisher this year probably was not here last year. We bring a propane fire prop and our own dry chemical extinguishers to your site and put every participant through a live discharge.

We also show kitchen managers where the manual pull station is and what happens after they pull it — a detail most staff have never been told. Sessions run around your shifts. See fire extinguisher training.

Fire Codes and Inspections in La Crosse

Every commercial building in La Crosse answers to the same three layers of rules, and knowing them takes the mystery out of an inspection. At the top is Wisconsin’s Fire Prevention Code, Wis. Admin. Code ch. SPS 314, which adopts NFPA 1, the Fire Code, for every public building and place of employment in the state. NFPA 1 in turn requires portable extinguishers to be maintained under NFPA 10, commercial kitchen hoods and suppression systems to comply with NFPA 96 and NFPA 17A, and spray booths to comply with NFPA 33. Underneath that, Wis. Stat. § 101.14(2) makes the local fire chief the state’s deputy and requires the fire department to inspect every public building and place of employment at least once each non-overlapping six-month period, unless the department has adopted one of the alternative schedules the statute allows. And for any employer, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 applies on top — monthly extinguisher checks, annual maintenance, and annual extinguisher education for staff.

La Crosse’s fire department handles inspections in the city, while the surrounding communities in La Crosse County and across the river in La Crescent and Winona answer to their own departments — Minnesota adopts a different fire code entirely. We keep the paperwork matched to whichever authority a given building answers to. The inspector who walks in is the La Crosse Fire Department, and what they look for is consistent: a current tag on every extinguisher, a semiannual tag on the kitchen suppression system, a cleaning label on the hood, a current tag on the booth system in a body shop, extinguishers of the right class within travel distance, and records they can put their hands on. Those are exactly the things our technicians leave behind, which is why customers in La Crosse tend to call us before the inspection rather than after.

If an inspection has already produced a correction order, send it to us. Most extinguisher, hood and suppression items on a Wisconsin fire inspection report can be corrected on a single visit, and we document the correction so you can close the order without a second trip from the department.

Questions We Get From La Crosse Businesses

Do you service La Crosse regularly, or only on request?

It is a standing route. Scheduled work is usually within a week or two, and a discharged kitchen or booth system that has you closed gets same-week attention.

Do you cover Onalaska, Holmen, and West Salem?

Yes, along with French Island, Bangor, and Trempealeau. Same route, no separate trip charge for the surrounding communities.

Our Third Street kitchen is tiny and the duct run is odd. Can a modern system fit?

Almost always. Wet chemical systems are designed around the appliance line and the actual duct run rather than around spare room. Old downtown kitchens are most of what we work in here.

How often does a high-volume bar kitchen need hood cleaning?

Often quarterly. Fryer-heavy and late-night kitchens load grease much faster than a moderate-volume restaurant. We look at your actual grease loading and tell you straight instead of selling a fixed schedule.

Can you handle our whole campus at once?

Yes. Dormitories, dining halls, labs, and athletic facilities get scheduled as a block with one consolidated report and invoice, and we can run staff training on the same visit.

Our extinguishers sit in a wash-down area and keep corroding. What are our options?

Pitting on a pressure vessel is not repairable, so corroded units get replaced. For wash-down areas we can recommend units and cabinets that hold up better, and we will flag placement changes that keep them out of the worst of it.

Do you fill beverage CO₂ in La Crosse?

Not yet. Beverage-cylinder fills are currently a Dubuque–Platteville area service while we bring more equipment online. We do fill and service CO₂ fire extinguishers here; if you have beverage or industrial cylinders, call and ask rather than assuming either way.

Can you get to French Island?

Yes. It is on the route. Scheduling around the bridges is just a matter of planning the day, not a reason to charge you extra.
